Joe Patz 64-68
passed 20 May 2021
Joseph Noel Patz left Millvale, PA at 17 years old and joined the United States Navy on 14 January 1958. It was graduation day, 15 March 1958. It was on this day that Joe began his ten-year journey with the United States Navy. Joe arrived at the USS Lindenwald (TSD-6) (date unknown). Joe headed to his next assignment on the USS Monrovia APA-31 in July 1958. His ship went to Beirut, Lebanon. He would remain on board this ship until returning to home port on 9 February 1960. Joe was then assigned to the USS Oriskany where he arrived in San Diego for duty 5 June 1962. He traveled from San Diego, California to Hawaii, then Subic Bay, and Manila, Philippines. The journey continued from Hong Kong where he toured off duty to Tiger Balm Gardens, Toci Park, and Kowloon. His ship headed toward Japan where Joe had liberty in Yokosuka enjoying such sites as Thieves Alley, The Great Buddha, and the American Naval Yard. He was able to take liberty in Tokyo as well as visiting the Kiyosumi Teagarden and Mount Fuji. The USS Oriskany was headed for Vietnam. The USS Oriskany returned to San Diego, California on 10 March 1964. He was able to see different cities throughout Japan during his time on liberty to include Iwakuni, Beppu , Monkey Mountain, Sasebo and once again Yokosuka. Upon returning to San Diego, California, Joe was then assigned to the USS Benjamin Stoddert DDG-22 in1964. This ship left port for East Asia to include Vietnam. Joe remained with the USS Benjamin Stoddert until he was Honorably Discharged on 2 February 1968. Joe went to Vietnam four times during his tenure with the Navy. Joe's MOS and Rank upon leaving the Navy was MM2 (E5). Joe was 28 years old and ready for a new journey despite the fact he didn't receive a warm welcome from his own country upon his return. This has stayed with most Vietnam Veterans throughout their entire lives. Joe continued his experience with the military by traveling back to Japan as a civilian in 1996 where he supported his wife, Joy, who was a Dodd’s teacher in Yokosuka. They toured all the places that Joe had visited (excluding a few places that only the guys would visit back in the day) before moving to Keflavik Iceland for three years at the Naval Air Station where Joy taught the military kids. Their final tour of duty was in Grafenwoehr Germany where they remained with the Army Garrison military schools until 2011. Joe and Joy retired in Southwestern Pennsylvania near their son and daughter-in-law who were also in the Navy. Which brings me to when Joe passed away on 20 May 2021 at the age of 80 years old. Should you ever wish to visit Beaver, Pennsylvania, there is a Vietnam Memorial across from the Courthouse. Joe’s been honored with a brick stating his name, rank and service. Joe will be missed but lives on through his son who would very much like to hear stories of his father should you ever wish to contact Joy Patz at geldstuck48.com@gmail.com.
Thank you, Steve Venis
